Or they might want to eat terribly for a week but live in decent conditions still. Besides, even during that extended period of downtime, a player might want to eat a fancy meal or stay somewhere really nice. Living Expenses cover the cost of living. If I skip laundry for a week and stay at a motel, my rent doesn't decrease. If I go to a bar, my expenses don't drop considerably. In the real world, my day to day expenses aren't paused when I decide to go to a bar. Others will have laundromats where you have to pay. And in the real world, only some hotels will have laundry services. You suddenly stop needing to pay taxes? The IRS would disagree, as would the king/noble that requires you to pay taxes in a D&D world. so how much does that cost? How much would a poor adventurer need to spend on average on their equipment between adventures if living a Wretched lifestyle, since equipment maintenance isn't included in that? I know this typically has zero mechanical impact but I want to get a sense of how these expenses are calculated, as it's always bugged me that it has never been explained properly.ĮDIT: And there's no mention of what happens when equipment isn't maintained, or that it needs to be at all.
